Matt Phillips is a writer, musician, record executive and playwright.
His music journalism has featured in such magazines as Classic Pop and Jazzwise, where he won the inaugural Write Stuff award for jazz writing.
He is the founder of two music websites: movingtheriver.com, which focuses on the music and movies of the 1980s, and soundsofsurprise.com, which focuses on jazz and its related genres.
Matt’s first book Level 42: Every Album, Every Song was published in 2021, and he is currently working on a project looking at the music of John McLaughlin. Matt has been Universal Music’s jazz catalogue manager and Jazz FM’s web editor, and written the liner notes for Miles Davis, Tony Williams and Billy Cobham DVDs and CDs.
As a multi-instrumentalist, he has performed extensively in London and Europe, and co-written songs for Silver Sun.
His first play, Dreaming Of Fitzrovia, was selected for the Write On festival of new writing in 2009, and its rehearsed reading was directed by Sarah Berger and starred Malcolm Sinclair and Jeff Rawle.
Matt has attended two Arvon playwriting courses, working with writers such as Simon Stephens, Steve Waters and Rebecca Lenkiewiecz.
He is currently looking to rekindle his love of playwriting, and collaborate with a variety of people at AWL with a view to producing some work on stage.
