At the start of 1887, Hobart Jones is the foppish, aristocratic and inveterate president of the Royal Society of Balladeers, Oxford. The Premier of New South Wales requests his presence in Sydney to unite the balladeers for the centennial of the colony in 1888. Arriving with his beautiful and loyal maid Adelaide, Jones finds himself at the hands of a new premier, and his greatest ally turns out to be a republican whose interest in balladeering is outshone by his interest in Adelaide. Will her charms be enough to unite the balladeers of New South Wales?
