After being injured a coach accident in Holland, Handel is nursed in a hermitage by two characters who disturb his peace of mind: Valentius, who is living the life of a monk, and Agnes, a strangely-behaving servant girl.
Despite being troubled by them, as well as by ghosts from his past and by the onset of blindness, Handel battles on with composing his final oratorio Jephtha, supported by a team of friends in London: his librettist Thomas Morell, his secretary Christopher Smith, and above all by his adoring admirer, artist and blue-stocking Mary Delany.
Will Handel’s brutal surgery at the hands of a quack oculist save his sight?
Will he be able to resolve his doubts in time to complete his life’s work?
